Centrelink Volunteer Program
SRAC is a registered host organisation for Centrelink's mutual obligation activities
(formerly known as Work for the Dole)

Who can participate?

People on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, or other payments

With mutual obligation requirements

What you’ll do:

Help with community events and programs

Support cultural, admin, or day-to-day tasks

Gain workplace skills in a safe and respectful environment

Work and Development Orders (WDO)
Sydney Region Aboriginal Corporation (SRAC) is an approved WDO Sponsor under the NSW Government’s Work and Development Order (WDO) scheme, managed by Revenue NSW.
This program allows eligible people to reduce their NSW fines by participating in unpaid work, approved activities and support programs with us instead of paying in cash.

Who is eligible?
​You may be eligible for a WDO if you:

Receive a Centrelink benefit
-
Have a mental illness, intellectual disability or cognitive impairment
-
Are experiencing homelessness
-
Are under 18
-
Are experiencing acute financial hardship
-
Have a serious addiction to drugs, alcohol or volatile substances

What can you do at SRAC?​
-
As a WDO sponsor, SRAC can support you to work off fines through:
-
Unpaid work (e.g. cultural programs, cleaning, events, admin, groundskeeping)

Education and life skills activities
-
Participation in counselling or support programs

​​
​​If you are already engaged with an external counselling service,
SRAC may be able to report on their behalf as part of your WDO,
with the correct permissions and provider collaboration.
​​
Monthly Cap:
WDO activities are capped at $1,000 per participant per month, regardless of the type or mix of activities you complete.
Revenue NSW sets fixed dollar values for each eligible hour or activity.

Once approved, we’ll submit your WDO application and manage the monthly reporting to Revenue NSW

Student Placements at SRAC
SRAC offers structured student placements for those studying in relevant fields and seeking practical experience in a culturally safe, community-led organisation.
​
We support future workers in Aboriginal health, community services, and early years education to learn in a hands-on, real-world setting while contributing meaningfully to our programs.​

Who can apply?

TAFE or RTOs
(e.g. Cert III/IV Community Services, Individual Support, Early Childhood Education)
-
Universities
(e.g. Social Work, Youth Work, Aboriginal Health, Allied Health, Community Development)
-
Other relevant vocational or higher education pathways

We prioritise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
and those studying in community-facing disciplines.

What we offer:

Cultural insight and mentoring from Aboriginal staff
