About the Role
The Aboriginal Family Support Worker position is funded by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, Community and Family Support (CAFS) Program. The objective of the program is to deliver flexible early intervention support to children, young people, families, and communities experiencing or at risk of vulnerability to prevent escalation and to address risk factors that may lead to entry into the
child protection system.
The Support Worker works with families to deliver social activities and parenting programs, building capacity, and connecting families with community.
Support can be provided within a group or individually, in the home, or accompanying the family to appointments or other activities.
Key Responsibilities
• Support families to actively participate within the community and increase social and life skills
• Develop and facilitate a range of social support activities for children and families
• Undertake risk assessments, project plans and budgets for activities, outings and events
• Regularly monitor and review participants needs and adjust supports as required
• Work collaboratively with other stakeholders to identify needs of families and ensure effective service delivery
• Participate (as required) in effective intake & assessment processes:
o Manage enquiries and referrals
o Enter client data into client management system
o Prioritise incoming referrals and manage competing demands
o Untertake client assessments
o Identify client needs and effectively refer to relevant services
o Source and deliver information to individuals, families, and community
Quality Service Provision
• Ensure SRAC provides information to participants on their rights and responsibilities
• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of participants, their families and other supports
• Ensure accurate and confidential recording and maintenance of all documentation
• Adhere to relevant legislation and standards, and implement best practice
• Work collaboratively to facilitate and support relationships between participants, their families/friends, service providers and wider support network
• Regular review of policy, process, and service delivery standards
• Respond in an appropriate and timely manner to any queries and/or concerns
Organisational Development
• Review and implement policy & procedure
• Contribute to decision-making processes within the organisation
• Attend monthly SRAC Staff Meetings
Community Development
• Develop and maintain close working relationships with service providers and community agencies to facilitate continued community development
• Maintain a current understanding of the issues that are affecting our clients, our services and the wider community and report regularly to your Manager with findings and recommendations
Requirements
Selection Criteria (Essential)
Aboriginality. The position is an identified Aboriginal position. Aboriginality is a genuine qualification authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination ACT 1977
Qualifications in health, social work, psychology, early childhood education or extensive relevant experience in similar role
Previous experience and strong commitment to working with Indigenous people & communities, and a broad understanding of the issues experienced by Aboriginal families living in our community
Works independently and effectively manages time and resources to provide professional, clear, accurate and prompt information to various stakeholders in a complex work environment
High level communication skills, and demonstrated problem solving, effective prioritisation and escalation skills
Demonstrated ability to coordinate the provision of quality, person-centred community engagement and outreach programs, workshops, presentations, and events
Current Working with Children Check (WWCC), and unrestricted NSW drivers’ licence
