FOR OUR RESILIENCE

Aboriginal people with disability have shaped For Our Resilience (FOR) from its inception. FOR focuses on sharing experiences and knowledge among peers, it focuses less on the practice development, and more on the increase in capacity of the people participating to use skills and resources to increase their safety and wellbeing (safeguarding).

FOR is built using a culturally-safe framework.

This approach recognises people’s spiritual, cultural, emotional and physical wellbeing and has been shown to reduce barriers to disability services for Aboriginal people because it provides a place where the effects of intergenerational trauma, low socio-economic status and discrimination are acknowledged and understood.

Our design also responds to the low levels of informal support in people’s lives. This may be because of disconnection with family or because the effects of intergenerational trauma have reduced people’s capacity to provide support.
